And in other news, Pantone has honoured Prince with a custom purple. Clearly a colour preference for Prince, purple came to the fore when Prince released ‘Purple Rain’ in 1984. It was Prince’s sixth studio album and it’s the soundtrack to his film of the same name. It is currently the third best-selling soundtrack of all time. Winner of seven Grammys, Prince carved out a unique place in music, art, fashion and culture. The song ‘Purple Rain’ won an Academy Award in 1984 for Best Original Song Score. Laurie Pressman of Pantone said the unique shade of purple is emblematic of Prince’s distinctive style. This image features Prince performing at the halftime show at the Super Bowl XLI in 2007. The show garnered 140m viewers and Prince finished the performance with Purple Rain during a downpour. Love the blue and orange! Thanks for the heads up @jana.girl #57thacademyawards#oscars1985#prince#pantone#purple#purplerain
What the world needs now: LOVE in Hebrew thanks to @ideascircus1965. This cool image references Robert Indiana’s iconic Pop art sculpture (1970). A couple of versions of this sculpture exist and Indiana also created a version for a 1973 United States postage stamp. Sending love to those in need and especially Charlottesville. Neo-Nazis have no place in the 21st century and their behaviour is deplorable.
In the lead up to our painting party workshop happening this weekend I've been doing some practicing and experimenting🎨😎 All 64 gorgeous hues were made with just the three primaries and white. How awesome is colour?!?!?! #seachangesstudio#colourinspo#colourpalette#colourporn
This cool supergraphic was installed in NYC Times Square. It was commissioned by the Times Square Alliance as part of an ongoing public arts program. The 2011 installation by Molly Dilworth is ‘Cool Water, Hot Island’ and it aimed at refreshing and reviving the busy streetscape. The colour palette of blues and lighter hues reflected more sunlight and absorbed less heat making the plaza a more comfortable place to sit. The colours and patterns suggested a river flowing through the plaza and acted as a visual contrast to the reds, oranges and yellows of the local billboards and signage. .
The Times Square Alliance was founded in 1992 to improve and promote Times Square, a major commercial intersection, tourist destination, entertainment centre and neighborhood in Midtown Manhattan at the junction of Broadway and Seventh Avenue. .
The recent redevelopment of Times Square in New York began as an experiment to improve pedestrian safety and traffic flow, and the proposed street closure was originally opposed by local businesses who thought this action would hurt business. The pedestrian plaza became permanent in 2011 and it now attracts around 360,000 pedestrians a day. .
Supergraphic colour interventions such as this one would be great in Australian cities and Resene’s new CoolColour paint technology would be an ideal paint for projects like this as it helps to keep the coating, substrate and surface cooler. Image credit: timessquarenyc.org and inhabitat.com
