Ever since the release of his breakthrough album "The Heist", it seems as if Macklemore has spent more time justifying his success (and apologizing to Kendrick for that Grammy steal) than making good music. This was more evident on his previous (and forgetful) release "The Unruly Mess I've Made". So when it was announced that his friend and music collaborator Ryan Lewis wasn't contributing to Gemini, I immediately thought this was a move in order to reinvent/restart Macklemore's music career. And to a certain extent we do get a different Macklemore that we haven't heard before. Like on tracks "Marmalade", "Willy Wonka", "Ten Million" and "How to Play The Flute". "Marmalade" has the same feel as DRAM's "Brocolli", Kyle's "Ispy" or any other bouncy-playful Lil Yachty song. "Willy Wonka" sounds like it was a Migos leftover thanks to Offset overshadowing Macklemore on that track (ironically this is my favorite song on the album lol). And on "How to Play The Flute" (which is the worst song on here) is a failed attempt to recreate Future's "Mask Off". We do get a a couple introspective tracks like "Intentions", "Church" and "Excavate" but really just don't do much for me and just fall flat. Overall, there are a couple playful songs on here but for the most part nothing really stands out enough to make this album worth coming back to.
